The Web and Beyond Conference, June 8th

Saturday / 20 May 06

The Web and Beyond, 10e SIGCHI conferenceSeveral weeks ago I registered to attend an upcoming conference titled The Web and Beyond at June 8th in the beautiful Tuschinski Theater Amsterdam. The conference will focus on interface design, technology and business consequences in the Web 2.0 world. Not really being the conference type of guy (and thoroughly hating the buzzword “Web 2.0”), I just couldn’t let the opportunity pass.

For the past month, along with fellow student Ron Kok, we’ve been taking part in a project designed by ourselves for our Communication & Multimedia Design major. Inspired by a previous project we’re researching the different interface problems when introducing new, dynamic interaction in a website — specifically, an online booking system for a resort. The results will be implemented in our own version of such a system aiming to introduce a better user experience without sacrificing accessibility.

The Web and Beyond will cover many topics I am really interested in, especially with the way the internet has developed in the past year. Having only been a month at work, the project is already showing how challenging it is to keep the accessibility up to par while still introducing that amazing interaction you had envisioned. Furthermore, our user research makes us question some very simple and well established design patterns in the online booking world. Hopefully the conference will give us new ideas on how to solve some of these problems. If not, the list of confirmed speakers is more than enough already.

If you’re planning to attend The Web and Beyond on the 8th of June, let me know and I’ll make sure we run into each other for a quick drink.

OMG! Its alive!

I've just read a few of the articles at 'ALA' and W3 and the world industry standard for designing pages seems to be changing once again...

That looks really interesting. Do they plan to publish lectures and such online after? I'd love to go!

Frances, I don't know. It doesn't look like they have plans to do so, I am afraid. And yes, you really should come to visit this place sometime soon ;-)

Ron, not likely. I am not much of a photographer and I hate walking around with the damn thing. Besides, what's there to shoot?

PS: If you ever write "r u" again, I will stab you in the face. ;-)

Peter, very, very nice. Enjoyed both Jared Spool's and Steven Pemberton's keynote and sessions a lot. However, in some cases I was expecting things to be a bit different, but I'll do a write-up of my experiences this weekend.

Groningen, I'm afraid I haven't followed through with my promise. Things have been too hectic around here. I really need to apolegize about this to you and everyone else. It seems I won't be making any updates until I finish (read: start) on a new site.

The only thing I can find is on Flickr and another, seemingly, extensive write-up by Bram Van Damme.

Is there something special you'd like to know? If so, you're free to e-mail me.

Still here. Busy. In about two months I hope to start a four month internship as part of my graduation process. I also plan to launch a new project before new year (just need to think of a name).

Give me a message on IM and we'll catch up. :-)
