2006: Remember the cause

Wednesday / 28 December 05

With 2005 drawing to an end, I think it’s safe to say that this year has shown a lot of new innovative ways of using existing technologies to create a richer experience for visitors.

DOM scripting and the AJAX methodology allows us to create interactive solutions for more complicated concepts, without sacrificing accessibility and usability too much. Others are still exploring the world of CSS and semantics in an effort to create better solutions that work for more people.

When building interfaces, we have the technology and increasing support to do the wildest things. It’s tempting to think of solutions that implement spiffy interactivity or effects or reduce the flow to a single page.

2006 is promising to be an exciting time, if we’re lead to believe the Web 2.0 movement. Ultimately, technology exists to increase usability: increase effectiveness, efficiency and the user experience. No matter how high the “I am going to wet my pants”-factor is, it is pointless if it doesn’t allow your visitor to get more done in less time in a more enjoyable manner. So, while others are going to focus on prototyping cutting-edge solutions, my advice to you is to remember the cause: usability.

See you in 2006.

Long live the cause!!!

I couldn't agree with you more.

I like to keep usability in mind, too.

Have a fun and safe new year Jeroen!

I am looking forward to this upcoming year.

Blwyddyn Newydd Dda!

So what you're saying is, usability is more important than, say, a fancy design? Or advanced coding?

Pah, that's just 'cause you're rubbish at the fancy stuff. :P

lol - good article. Nice to see I got a mention :D

Dom, no, in the end a fancy design or advanced coding should all serve a single purpose: allowing the user to accomplish his or her goals in an efficient and enjoyable manner.

That's usability and that's what I am saying. Do whatever you want, but just keep the usability aspect in mind.

Absolutely mate, you're right. Why do you think I keep my site as basic as it is? For usability, of course! Uh.. where's the rolleyes thing on this? :)

Hey Jeroen, you know that global media piece you posted on deviant art. I am curious, did you hand draw the land formation? If not what did you do?

V, this post would not be the place to discuss it. You're free to e-mail me at any time :-)

@Dom - rolleyes? You've been on VZi too much ;-)

@Jeroen - 100% agree. I regularly have conversations at work about whether .Net/Visual Studio is the way to do things (excited techies saying "yeah, we could do script callbacks" etct etc) or hand-roll our own Ajax stuff, but I always seemt oveer back to traditional, tried-and-tested (and easy-to-support) methods. Proper adoption of web2.0/Ajax type stuff is still a way off. Well, certainly in corporate world, I thnk. Usabilty must come first

Totally agree with you, Jeroen. A shame I hadn't gotten to your post yet in my feedreader (I'm only behind 2500~ entries right now!) or I'd have included it in my own of last night.
