Forza Studios: Beta Launched

Tuesday / 14 June 05

Forza StudiosA month ago we launched the first bits and pieces of a new community site titled Forza Studios, focusing on the recently released simulation racer Forza Motorsport for the Xbox console. It’s a project I had been working on and off for three months, having done everything from the front-end to the back-end.

The design is conventional in the gaming community, matching the look and feel of the Forza Motorsport game resulting in being instantly familiar to gamers. It’s being powered by semantic markup with CSS and a pinch of unobtrusive Javascript separating the three at birth.

I am quite happy with the result, even though there always are many things in need of tweaking. The plan was to quickly add our main service after beta launch, but, unfortunately, university and other obligations are stopping me from doing so. Funny how such things always tend to happen.

Hey Jeroen, that's a really nice site.

When you say it matches the look and feel of the game, do you mean it's the same design?

Maybe you could post a link to a screenshot of the game.

Nice one.

Robert, supposedly it even works almost flawlessly (one tiny error on the frontpage) in MSIE5/Mac :-P

Only checked the frontpage though.

When you click and slightly drag on the top orange background sections you notice the text behind the images to appear, maybe making it transparent or adding a display: none; proerty might be helpful?

Unless however that is just there for accessibility. :)

Eddie - It is. It's an annoying disadvantage of the image replacement method I used there. Meanwhile, I've developed a slightly different one, which is implemented only in the title graphic of the site -- it doesn't have any of those issues.

display: none works, but then screenreaders would ignore it as well. We don't want that. ;-)
