Using Javascript The Right Way

Monday / 18 October 04

I spend very little time with Javascript. In fact, only a year ago I was still very reluctant about using it. Nowadays, designers have started to learn how to put Javascript to good use to improve functionality on a web site.

Recently I came across a really interesting function that really made me realize Javascript can be a great technology for any type of user.

Using it the right way seems to rely mostly on using the Javascript DOM on top of an already wellformed (X)HTML document. This way the document remains accessible for the most important Javascript-disabled user: Google.

The article mentioned before also makes an interesting point by saying a user would expect such behaviour in a client-side application. We have the technology to meet those expectations, yet many don’t. Should we? In the future, should a web site look, feel and behave like a client-side application? Food for thought.

Sounds quite interesting. It would seem like using Javascript in a way as suggested in the article that it could make websites a lot more user friendly as a result.
